Washington, Sept. 6 (BUS): Casper Ruud is the first Norwegian player to run in the semi-finals of the US Open, according to the Associated Press.
Fifth seed Ruud defeated 13th seed Matteo Berrettini 6-1 6-4 7-6 (4) to continue his strong run this year at the Grand Slam tournaments.
Rudd must reach at least the final to stand a chance of finishing the US Open as the highest-ranked player in the world.
Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal, who lost on Monday, could finish the US Open as the new top-ranked player because Daniil Medvedev lost his match earlier in the tournament.
Rudd improved to 12-2 this season in the Grand Slam events. Rudd was runner-up at the French Open this year. He will face Nick Kyrgios or Karen Khachanov in the semifinals.
