Typhoon submerges villages, farmlands in northern Philippines

Manila, Oct. 17 (BNA) A tropical storm escalated to make landfall early Sunday morning in the northern Philippines, causing moderate to heavy rains that inundated villages and agricultural lands.

Reuters reported that nearly 1,000 people had been pre-emptively evacuated to safer ground.

A video posted by a resident of Claveria town in Cagayan province, about 600 kilometers (380 miles) north of the capital, Manila, showed widespread flooding and a house partially submerged, with trees blown away by high winds.

The Met Office said Nesat, packing winds of 120 kilometers (75 miles) per hour, could intensify as it moves toward the South China Sea.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Twitter that government assistance is on its way to the affected communities.
