Train driver dies and dozens injured in crash near Barcelona

A suburban commuter train driver has died and dozens were slightly injured after two trains crashed outside Barcelona on Monday night, Catalan authorities said.


Reuters reported that about 85 people were injured, according to the regional emergency services, which said that 77 immediately left and eight were taken to hospital.


The collision occurred when a freight train derailed and collided with a passenger train at a station in Sant Puy de Llobregat, about 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) from Barcelona, ​​at about 6 p.m.


“The driver of the passenger train died as a result of the collision,” the regional government said in a statement.


Catalan regional vice president Jordi Buenero, who visited the site on Monday evening, told reporters that an investigation would begin immediately into the cause of the crash.


“My sincere condolences to the family of the train driver who died in a derailment,” Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in a tweet.
