Tourism booming in Greece following lean pandemic years

Athens, Aug. 3 (BNA) Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias said that tourism is booming again in Greece two years after the outbreak of the epidemic, with numbers exceeding those of 2019.

Kikilias said nearly 3.5 million tourists arrived at the country’s airports during June, more than three times the number in June 2021.

The German news agency (dpa) reported that the monthly figure for the month was slightly higher than the figure for June three years ago, indicating a possible new record for this summer, as 2019 is seen as the best year yet for Greek tourism.

During that year, about 33 million tourists visited the country, more than three times the resident population.

Kikilias said the government was pursuing its goal of extending the holiday season until December.

While not all parts of Greece were suitable for winter, Kikilias said, with the north seeing snow and sub-zero temperatures, weather conditions remained mild on islands such as Crete and southern Peloponnese.
