Tiafoe-Alcaraz, Ruud-Khachanov set for US Open men’s semis

New York, Sept. 9 (US): There are four first-timers in the men’s US Open semi-finals, the first time since the event’s first year in 1881, when it was known as the US Open.

One of them is Frances Tiafoe, the first American man to reach this far in a home Grand Slam since Andy Roddick in 2006.

The No. 22 seed faces No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz in the evening semi-final, after No. 5 Casper Rudd plays No. 27 Karen Khachanov in the afternoon.

Rudd is the only one to have previously reached this stage in a major tournament, losing to Rafael Nadal in this year’s French Open final, according to the Associated Press.

The Norwegian will reach first place in the standings if Alcaraz wins and loses. Alcaraz, 19, would become the youngest No. 1 if Rod won and lost.

He will have to call up enough energy after playing back-to-back five-set matches, including his quarter-final win over Jannik Sinner which took 5 hours and 15 minutes and finished at 2:50 am, the last finish in US Open history.
