The world welcomes 2022, again under the cloud of coronavirus

Berlin, Dec. 31 (BUS): Billions of people around the world are set to welcome 2022, on a second New Year’s Eve marked by coronavirus restrictions.

It will take 26 hours between 1000 GMT on Friday and 1200 GMT on Saturday for the entire globe to ring in the new year, reports the international dpa news agency.

The festivities begin on the island of Samoa, then pass through Australia and Asia to Europe, South America, the east coast of the United States, California, Hawaii, and the uninhabited islands of Baker Island and Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean.

Many large parties and fireworks shows around the world have been canceled, for example in London and Paris.

Elsewhere, festivities have been greatly curtailed, including events in Madrid and Rio.

In Berlin, there will be no big fireworks display at the Brandenburg Gate and there will be no party with hundreds of thousands of people. However, public broadcaster ZDF plans to put on a show with singers such as Bonnie Tyler and Marian Rosenberg, among others.

In Sydney, the giant fireworks display is slated to once again with spectators, but those who wanted to experience it live had to purchase a ticket for one of about 30 viewing points.

In New York, the traditional New Year’s Eve party in Times Square will once again be held with spectators – but all visitors must be vaccinated against Covid-19.
