Swedish government presents plans for renewed Covid-19 measures

Stockholm, Dec. 8 (BNA): The Swedish government is reintroducing preventive health measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus, despite the relatively low numbers of Covid-19 cases.

Health Minister Lena Hallengren said at a press conference in Stockholm on Tuesday that travelers will be required to wear face masks on public transport from Wednesday.

She added that employers should also allow their employees to work remotely, ensure social distancing in public places and avoid crowding in restaurants.

Hallingren said Sweden is extending the use of the coronavirus vaccination certificate, which was submitted a week ago and will soon be required in restaurants and gyms.

If case numbers and the situation in hospitals worsen, further action may follow.

The most important thing, the minister said, was to vaccinate people against Covid-19, a plea echoed by the new Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson, who has stood by her.

Sweden adopted relatively mitigating measures at the start of the pandemic, unlike many other countries in Europe, but it has faced high infection rates compared to the rest of Scandinavia.

Currently, Swedish numbers are lower than most other EU countries. Andersson said that while the number of new infections is rising in Sweden, that is still at a relatively low level.
