SEOUL, Sept. 1 (BNA) An extremely powerful typhoon is approaching the Korean Peninsula, and the southern tourist island of Jeju may have its direct impact early next week, the official meteorological agency said Thursday.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said Typhoon Hinnamur, the 11th tropical storm this year, is expected to move southwest of the country 610 kilometers south-southwest of the Japanese island of Okinawa at 3 a.m. Friday before turning north.
Next, the agency said, Hinnamnor is expected to move quickly northward, reaching the sea 70 kilometers south of the southern port city of Seogwipo in Jeju on Tuesday.
The hurricane is classified as very strong, with an atmospheric pressure of 915 hectopascals at its center and a maximum wind speed of 55 miles per second.
When Hinnamnor reaches the sea off Jeju, it may get stronger with an air pressure of 940 hectopascals and a maximum wind speed of 47 miles per second, the agency said, noting that a storm with a maximum wind speed of 44 to 54 miles per second could blow people or Big stones away.
The Japan Meteorological Agency predicted that Hinamnor could come to sea southeast of Jeju at 3 a.m. on Sept. 6 with a central pressure of 945 hectopascals and a maximum wind speed of 45 miles per second, while the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects it to pass over the seas. East Jeju on September 5.
