Strong earthquake shakes Mexico´s Pacific coast; 1 killed

Mexico City, Sept. 19 (BNA): A 7.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico’s central Pacific coast on Monday, killing at least one person and triggering a seismic alarm in the stricken capital on the anniversary of two previous devastating earthquakes.

There were at least some early reports of damage to buildings from the quake, which struck at 1:05 p.m. local time, according to the US Geological Survey, which initially put its strength at 7.5.

It added that the epicenter of the quake was 37 km southeast of Aquila, near the borders of the states of Colima and Michoacan, at a depth of 15.1 km.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said via Twitter that the Secretary of the Navy told him that one person was killed in the coastal city of Manzanillo, Colima when a wall collapsed in a shopping mall, according to the Associated Press.

Mexico’s National Civil Defense Agency said that based on historical data for Mexico’s tsunami waves, differences of up to 32 inches (82 cm) were possible in coastal water levels near the epicenter.

The US Tsunami Warning Center said dangerous tsunami waves were possible for coasts located 186 miles (300 km) from the epicenter.

Humberto Garza stood outside a restaurant in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City holding his 3-year-old son. Like many who were wandering outside after the earthquake, Garza said the earthquake alarm sounded so soon after the annual simulation that he wasn’t sure it was real.
