Strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake shakes southern Mexico

Mexico City, Dec. 11 (BNA): A powerful 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Mexico on Sunday morning, sending worried residents of the capital into the streets.

The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 2 1/2 miles (4 km) northwest of Coral Falso in the southern state of Guerrero.

The area is located along Mexico’s Pacific coast between the beach resorts of Acapulco and Zihuatenejo, according to the Associated Press.

There were no immediate reports on the extent of the damage. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said via Twitter that civil defense was checking the damage.

López Obrador later posted a video on Twitter of a live conversation with Guerrero State Governor Evelyn Salgado, in which she said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said there have been no reports of accidents in the capital.
