Storm Nalgae’s casualties rising to 48; 22 missing

Manila, Oct. 30 (BNA): The death toll from floods and landslides caused by rains in the Philippines has risen to 48. The country’s disaster agency said, with 22 others reported missing after Tropical Storm Nalgi inundated many parts of the archipelago.

About 40 people were injured, while nearly 170,000 were sheltering in evacuation centers, government data reported, as the storm pulled out of wilderness areas after it swept the country over the weekend, including the capital, Manila.

The disaster management agency said most of the casualties were recorded in the Southern Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, where 40 people died in the landslides, with 10 still missing.

On Saturday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the distribution of emergency aid in hard-hit areas.

Nalgae, which has made landfall five times, is the second deadliest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, which sees an average of 20 tropical storms annually.

The Philippine Met Office said Nalgae was tracking west and could intensify into a typhoon over the South China Sea as it heads toward southern China.
