Sri Lankan president resigns, Parliament to convene Saturday

Colombo, July 15 (BNA) The Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament said today, Friday, that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has resigned and Parliament will meet to choose a new leader.

Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abhiwardana said Parliament will meet on Saturday to start the process of electing a new president. The process is expected to be completed within seven days.

Their new selection will serve as president for the remainder of Rajapaksa’s term, which ends in 2024.

This person can appoint a new Prime Minister, who will then have to be approved by Parliament.
