Colombo, July 9 (BNA) President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has agreed to resign in the coming days, the speaker of Sri Lanka’s parliament said on a tumultuous Saturday that also saw the prime minister’s announcement that he would step down, according to the Associated Press.
Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abiwardena said in a televised statement that he informed Rajapaksa that the leaders of Parliament met and decided to request to leave office, and the President agreed.
Abipurdina added that Rajapaksa will remain until Wednesday to ensure a smooth transition of power.
