Speaker highlights Bahrain’s democratic and political strides

Madrid, November 27 (BNA) Parliament Speaker Fawzia bint Abdullah Zainal sheds light on Bahrain’s democratic and political steps within the framework of the reform project led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

She was addressing the 143rd plenary session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), hosted by Spain, under the title Contemporary Challenges to Democracy: Overcoming Division and Building Society”.

The head of the Bahrain delegation at the Inter-Parliamentary Union conference stressed the role of the constitution and the National Action Charter as a guarantor of democratic practices.

She stressed the continuation of coordination between the legislative and executive authorities of the government, stressing the keenness of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister to support cooperation between the government and the legislative authority.

She said that Bahrain, while fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, has not taken any measures to restrict the rights of citizens, infringe on their privacy or restrict their freedoms, and spare no effort to protect their decent livelihoods and preserve their economic and living conditions.

She urged a multilateral world and effective participation in decision-making, stressing the importance of involving citizens and their representatives in the democratic process.

The speaker highlighted the current challenges facing democracy, and highlighted the critical role of parliaments in protecting democratic and political processes.

She emphasized the rapid technological strides over the past years, which have facilitated people’s access to information and enabled parliaments to open up to the public.
