Spain winger Ferran Torres leaves Man City for Barcelona

Barcelona, December 28 (BNA): Barcelona completed the signing of Ferran Torres from Manchester City on Tuesday for 55 million euros ($62.25 million), nearly double what the England champions paid for the Spanish striker 16 months ago.

Torres has signed a five-year deal that will include a €1 billion ($1.13 billion) purchase clause, according to Barcelona, according to the Associated Press.

The Spanish club needed to boost its attacking options after Sergio Aguero retired with a heart problem. Aguero also joined Barcelona from City but only played five matches.

The 21-year-old returns to Spain, where he played for Valencia before joining City in the off-season in 2020 with a reputation as one of the best young players in Europe.

He has scored 16 goals in 43 games in all competitions for City, but has never been a regular due to the many attacking options available to manager Pep Guardiola. Torres has not played since October due to a foot injury he sustained while on national team duty.

“Veran should be very proud of what he has achieved here at Manchester City,” said Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football.

“Last season it was his first time in a new country, but he adapted well. He always gave 100%, worked hard for the team and scored goals that helped us win titles.”

Torres will be presented as a Barcelona player at the Camp Nou on Monday.
