South Korea’s Heavy rain casualties rise to 11 deaths, 8 missing

SEOUL, Aug. 11 (BNA) The death toll from torrential rains this week has risen to 11, with 8 missing, officials said Thursday.


Among the dead were six in Seoul, three in Gyeonggi Province and two in Gangwon Province, while three of the eight unaccounted for were from Seoul, according to data from the disaster management headquarters and central safety measures, Yonhap Agency reported.


A total of 3,775 homes and buildings were submerged, most of them in Seoul.


More than 980 people from 548 families, mostly from the broader Seoul area, were displaced, leaving them to stay in local schools and gyms. Officials said another 4,297 people from 2,042 families across the country had been temporarily evacuated.


The Korea Meteorological Administration raised a rain warning for the wider Seoul region and Incheon, 27 kilometers west of Seoul, but kept a warning of heavy rains for the central region of the country, including South Chungcheong Province, where rainfall could reach between 30 and 40 mm per hour.
