South Korean President picks women for last remaining two Cabinet ministers

Seoul, May 26 (BNA) President Yoon Seok-yeol Thursday appointed his nominees for education and social welfare ministers, choosing women for both positions after criticism that his government is male-dominated.

And Yonhap News Agency reported that Park Sun-ae, a professor at the Graduate School of Public Administration at Seoul National University, has been appointed as education minister, while Kim Sung-hee, a former deputy, has been appointed as minister of social welfare.

A senior presidential official said Yoon planned to nominate women as his nominees for education and social welfare ministers, as part of his efforts to encourage career advancement for women.

The presidential office said Park, an expert in public administration, is qualified to improve educational management and help the Yoon administration embody key state affairs in the field of education.

The office said Kim, a food and drug expert, served as the head of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety between 2015 and 2016.

Oh Yoo-kyeong, president of the College of Pharmacy at Seoul National University, has been appointed head of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

In South Korea, all ministers undergo a parliamentary installation process, but their appointments do not require parliamentary approval.
