South Korea to bid to host Asian Cup

SEOUL, June 21 (BNA) The Korean Football Association said that South Korea will launch a bid to host the 2023 Asian Cup after China’s decision to waive its rights to the tournament.

China was due to host the tournament in June and July next year, but the country’s efforts to pursue a COVID-free policy led to the 24-team event being moved, Reuters reports.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) invited bids to host the 2023 Asian Cup last month, saying that interested parties must confirm their bid by June 30.

“The KFA is promoting the hosting of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup to be hosted by the AFC in Korea,” the KFA said in a notice on its website.

“Therefore, we would like to proceed with a request for a proposal from local governments that have stadiums that can host international matches, such as local football stadiums and public sports stadiums.”

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol gave the green light to push to host the finals earlier this month, ordering the sports minister to try to secure the event.
