South Korea submits bid to host 2023 Asian Cup

Seoul, July 2 (BNA) South Korea officially submitted its bid to host the 2023 Asian Cup after China’s decision to waive the hosting rights, the Korean Football Association said.

The Asian Football Confederation has extended the bidding deadline to July 15 after the 24-team event, scheduled for June and July next year, was moved from China due to the country’s strict policy on COVID-19, Reuters reports.

“The KFA has officially sent a letter of intent to host the 2023 AFC Asian Cup to the AFC,” the AFC said.

South Korea won the inaugural AFC Asian Cup in 1956 and retained the title as host four years later – the only time they have hosted a final. The country has not hosted a major tournament since it co-hosted the World Cup with Japan in 2002.

The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) said on Tuesday it would launch a bid to host the 2023 event, while Australian Football said it was studying a potential bid.

Japan said it had been unofficially contacted to replace China as host.
