Sinner digs deep to reach Monte Carlo quarter-finals, Ruud stunned

Paris, April 13 (BNA): Yannick Sinner was dragged down by Hubert Hurkacz as the Italian seventh seed saved a match point to claim a 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 win at Monti. Carlo Masters on Thursday and book his place in the quarter-finals.

With Usain Bolt sprinting in the stands, Hurkacz raced to a 3-0 lead before Sinner got on the board and wiggled around the world No. 13 at the end of the opening set before capping it off with a fiery first strike.

Sinner, a quarter-finalist in Monte Carlo in 2022, found himself in more trouble soon after the start of the second set, but the 21-year-old reacted after dropping serve to make a break and level at 2-2.

Hurkacz raised his game to force a tiebreaker and looked in control but the flabby Sinner saved a match point and pulled the match into a tiebreaker.

The Italian then put his nose in front and held on to complete the win as Hurkacz faded, reports Reuters.

Earlier, German seed Jan-Lennard Struff stunned fourth seed Casper Ruud 6-1 7-6 (8-6), ending the Estoril champion’s nine-match winning streak on clay that lasted until July.

Defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Nicolas Jarry 6-3 6-4, while Andrei Rublev claimed his 50th victory on the tour by defeating close friend Karen Khachanov 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Italy’s Matteo Berrettini withdrew earlier in his meeting with sixth seed Holger Rohn with an abdominal injury, sending the Danish teenager through to the quarter-finals.

In-form third seed Daniil Medvedev, winner of four hard court tournaments in 2023, took on Alexander Zverev in their first meeting on clay while world number one Novak Djokovic met Lorenzo Musetti. Both results were not available at press time
