Scaloni, Ancelotti, Guardiola on FIFA coach award shortlist

Zurich, Feb. 9 (BNA): Lionel Scaloni, Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola were shortlisted Thursday for the ‘Best Coach’ award, while Walid Regragui didn’t get enough votes despite leading Morocco on a stunning run to the World Cup semi-finals.

A global panel of national team coaches and captains, as well as selected media and fans voting online, have selected Argentina’s Scaloni, Real Madrid’s Ancelotti and Manchester City’s Guardiola as finalists for the FIFA Men’s Coach of the Year 2022 award.

Argentina won the World Cup, Madrid won the UEFA Champions League, and City secured the Premier League title, reports the Associated Press.

Regragui was appointed in August less than three months before the World Cup kicked off and led his team undefeated through a group that included Belgium and Croatia.

Morocco then eliminated Spain and Portugal before an injury-hit team lost to defending champions France.

No coach from Africa or an African national team has been voted into the top three shortlist since the first FIFA coaching award was awarded in 2010.

Only coaches from Europe and South America finished in the top three all-time although two-thirds of the voting committee members came from outside the continents.
