Samsung tops in global TV sales for 16th year

SEOUL, Feb. 20 (BNA): Samsung Electronics topped global TV sales for the 16th consecutive year in 2021 thanks to a surge in sales of high-end TVs amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a global market research firm said Sunday.

Last year, Samsung Electronics captured 29.5 percent of the world’s TV market in terms of sales value due to high demand for quantum dot diode (QLED) TVs, according to data from market tracker Omdia in London, according to South. Korea News Agency (Yonhap).

Global TV shipments fell to 210 million units in 2021 from 217 million the previous year. Shipments are expected to reach about 217 million units this year.

Estimated shipments are at their lowest since 2017, as pandemic-led demand for television peaked.

Samsung began mass production of quantum dot (QD) OLED panels last November in a gradual transition to more profitable, high-quality QD displays than LCD panels.

In January, Samsung unveiled its 2022 TV lineup at the Consumer Electronics Show 2022 in Las Vegas, including Micro LED and Neo QLED TVs in various sizes and with advanced features aimed at improving life in the home during the pandemic.

Samsung said it plans to introduce QD-OLED TVs this year, with an original shipment target of 1.5 million units.

With the planned launch, the global premium TV market is entering into serious competition.
