London, Aug 17 (BUS): Cristiano Ronaldo received a police warning after a clip was posted online of the Manchester United striker appearing to drop a phone from the hand of an Everton fan at a Premier League match in April. “It is now over,” Merseyside Police said Wednesday.
Officers interviewed the 37-year-old soccer player regarding the allegation of assault and criminal damage following the incident at Goodison Park on April 9, according to the Associated Press.
Merseyside police have launched an investigation after a clip circulated online showing Ronaldo knocking a fan’s mobile phone to the floor as he walked towards a tunnel after United lost 1-0.
“We can confirm that a 37-year-old man voluntarily attended and was interviewed under caution in connection with an allegation of assault and criminal harm,” Merseyside Police said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The allegation relates to an incident following the football match between Everton and Manchester United at Goodison Park on Saturday 9 April. The matter has been treated as a conditional caution.”
Under British law, a warning is essentially a warning given by the police for a minor offense if a person confesses to committing the offense.
A conditional alert means that a person must also fulfill a certain obligation, such as replacing damaged property.
After the incident, Ronaldo issued an apology on social media for his “revolution” and called on a fan to watch a match at Old Trafford “as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship”.
