Robinson goal lifts US over El Salvador 1-0 in Cup qualifier

Washington Jan. 28 (BUS): Anthony Robinson catapulted the struggling United States to a strong position in the World Cup qualifiers, just as he did in September.

And as he broke freezing in the air and attacked, he celebrated not a single pose on his hands but a double, according to the Associated Press.

“We are definitely one step closer,” said Robinson, after his 52nd-minute goal led to a 1-0 victory over El Salvador on Thursday night, keeping the Americans on track for a return to the World Cup Finals. “It was not the most beautiful match.”

The United States has 18 points with five games remaining in the playoffs, one point behind Canada. Mexico has 17, followed by Panama (14), Costa Rica (12), Jamaica (seven), El Salvador (six) and Honduras (three).

The top three countries from North and Central America and the Caribbean qualify, and the fourth-placed team advances to a playoff against Oceania champions, most likely New Zealand.

The United States is in Canada on Sunday and Honduras is hosted on Wednesday in St. Paul, Minnesota. The playoffs end in March with trips to Mexico and Costa Rica around a match with Panama in Orlando, Florida.
