Barcelona, March 30 (BUS): A world record crowd watched a women’s soccer match that included more than 91,000 spectators, watching Barcelona defeat Real Madrid 5-2 in the Champions League at the Camp Nou stadium on Wednesday.
Organizers said 91,553 people attended Barcelona. The previous record for any women’s game was 90,185 in the 1999 World Cup Final between the United States and China at the Rose Bowl.
At the 2012 Olympics final in London, 80,203 people saw the United States defeat Japan 2-1 to win the gold medal, according to the Associated Press.
The club’s previous record was 60,739 in a La Liga match between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona at Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano in 2019.
A stadium-wide mosaic with the phrase “more than just empowering” appeared on the stands of the Camp Nou.
Barcelona advanced to the semi-finals 8-3 on aggregate after winning the first leg 3-1 in Madrid last week.
Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putilas scored one of Barcelona’s goals, which will face Arsenal or Wolfsburg in the semi-finals.
This was the first time that the Barcelona women’s team played a match at the Camp Nou in front of the fans. I’ve played in the stadium before but behind closed doors due to restrictions imposed by the Corona virus epidemic, and the team usually plays their matches at the much smaller Johan Cruyff Stadium, which seats about 6000 fans. Camp Nou has a capacity of 90,000 spectators.
Barcelona won all seven meetings with Madrid, which recently formed its women’s team.
