Rafael Leão’s early strike moves AC Milan top of Serie A

AC Milan, Feb. 13 (BNA): AC Milan climbed to the top of Serie A with a 1-0 victory over Sampdoria on Sunday, the Associated Press reported.

After beating city rivals 2-1 in the previous round of matches last weekend, Milan finished third in the table, two points behind leaders Inter Milan, who tied 1-1 with second-placed Napoli on Saturday.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Minnian set up the winning goal for Rafael Liao in the eighth minute.

The France international sent a long kick from outside his penalty area to feed Liao, who controlled the ball from the left, before past defender Bartosz Berezinski to defeat Sampdoria goalkeeper Vladimiro Facone.

This was the Portuguese striker’s tenth goal this season. Striker Olivier Giroud, who scored the two goals in the match against Inter, was headed in the second half from close range by the finger of Facone.

Milan leads the table with 55 points, one point behind Inter in second place, while Napoli is one point behind. Inter still has a match at hand.

Of the five remaining matches on Sunday, fifth-placed Atalanta host fourth-placed Juventus while seventh-placed Roma need points from their match against Sassuolo to compete for a place in Europe.
