Queen Elizabeth’s jubilee celebration takes a ratings bow

LOS ANGELES, June 8 / US: The secession of the United States from Britain is history, but the monarchy still controls the heart of its former colony.

Two specials about Queen Elizabeth II and her celebration of her 70th anniversary on the throne brought up the top 20-rated shows last week in prime time, according to Nielsen numbers released Tuesday, The Associated Press reports.

ABC’s star-studded “Party at the Palace,” which featured Elton John, Diana Ross and the Queen with Adam Lambert, came at No. 15. The CBS News documentary “Her Majesty the Queen,” hosted by Gayle King, came in at No. 18.

A skit of The Queen having tea with an animated Paddington Bear wowed a crowd of spectators at a platinum pop jubilee party outside Buckingham Palace. The pre-recorded video has proven irresistible on a large scale on the Internet.

The first two games of the Golden State Warriors-Boston Celtics NBA Finals topped the ratings, but viewers also had time to catch a special prime-time episode of “The Price Is Right” in honor of first responders.

Backed by Basketball, ABC topped the prime-time week, with an average of 4.4 million viewers. CBS had 3.1 million, NBC 2.5 million, Fox 1.5 million, Univision 1.3 million, Telemundo 890,000 and Ion Television 870,000.

ABC’s “World News Tonight” won the evening news contest with an average of 7.2 million viewers. NBC’s “Nightley News” grossed 6.1 million, and CBS’ Evening News garnered 4.3 million.
