London, Sept. 10 (BNA): The state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II will take place on Sept. 19 at Westminster Abbey in London after the public gets a chance to pay their last respects to the king, palace officials said.
Elizabeth, the country’s longest-reigning, died Thursday at her summer retreat in the Scottish Highlands, according to the Associated Press.
Details of the 96-year-old’s funeral will be announced later, but organizers on Saturday called the ceremony “a fitting farewell to one of the special characters of our time”.
Palace officials said there will be opportunities to see the late king’s oak coffin on its journey from Balmoral Castle in Scotland to Edinburgh and back in London, where her body will remain in its state for four days from Wednesday.
