PSV announces deal with Liverpool for WCup star Cody Gakpo

London, Dec 27 (BNA): He was one of the standouts at the World Cup and now PSV striker Cody Gakow looks set to kick off the January transfer window with a move to Liverpool.

PSV announced Monday that it has agreed an undisclosed fee for the Netherlands international, reports the Associated Press today.

PSV general manager Marcel Brands described the deal as a “record transfer” for the club. Liverpool have yet to confirm the deal.

The window didn’t officially open until January 1, and confirmation of the proposed transfer came as a surprise given that Manchester United had recently been linked with a move for Gakpo.

United manager Erik ten Hag has spoken of his desire to sign a striker next month after Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract was terminated in November.

Jakpo scored three goals in the Netherlands’ march to the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Liverpool were expected to focus on strengthening their midfield, and manager Jurgen Klopp has been open about his admiration for England star Jude Bellingham. However, injuries to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota convinced Liverpool to move quickly with Jakopo.

Major transfers may be difficult to complete during the January window due to price inflation midway through the season.

But United’s determination to step up their attack could make the club one of the biggest movers in the market before the window closes at the end of next month.
