PSG part ways with manager Pochettino after 18 months in charge

Paris, July 5 (BNA): Paris Saint-Germain parted ways with its coach Mauricio Pochettino, today, Tuesday, ending the 18-month period that the Argentine spent with the French champions, despite the fact that his contract remains for a year.

Reuters reports that Pochettino, who was appointed in January 2021, won the Ligue 1 title in 2021-22 and the French Cup in 2020-21 but failed to win the Champions League.

Christoph Galtier is set to replace Pochettino, with club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi saying last month they were in talks with Nice, who also moved quickly to appoint former Borussia Dortmund coach Lucien Favre to succeed Galtier.

“Paris Saint-Germain has confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino has completed his role at the club,” the club said in a statement.

“The club would like to thank Mauricio Pochettino and his staff for their work and wish them well for the future.”

Paris Saint-Germain, the league winner eight times since the acquisition, was the runner-up for the Champions League in 2020, but was knocked out in the last 16 last season by the league champions, Real Madrid.

Pochettino came up with a strong resume after making Tottenham Hotspur a permanent top four in the Premier League and leading them to the Champions League final in 2019.

But despite having a star-studded squad at their disposal at PSG, led by Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi, the Parisian club failed to win the other domestic leagues on offer, lifting only the league title last season.

Pochettino leaves Paris Saint-Germain after 84 official matches, after winning 55, drawing 15 and losing 14.

PSG is scheduled to hold a media conference in the Parc des Princes at 1400 CET (1200 GMT) on Tuesday.
