Powerful earthquake hits southeast Taiwan, tsunami warning issued

Taipei, Sept. 18 (BNA): A 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked the sparsely populated southeastern part of Taiwan on Sunday, according to the island’s weather bureau, triggering a tsunami warning.

Reuters reported that the US Geological Survey measured the quake with a magnitude of 7.2 and a depth of 10 km.

Taiwanese media said a low-rise building housing a convenience store has collapsed, while at least one train carriage has been dismantled at a station on the east coast.

It was not clear if there were any injuries.

The US Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning in Taiwan after the earthquake. Dangerous tsunami waves were possible as far as 300 kilometers (190 miles) from the epicenter along the coast of Taiwan, she said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a one-meter tsunami warning for part of Okinawa Prefecture following the earthquake.
