Seoul, Nov. 6 (BUS): Police data showed Sunday that a squad of police first arrived at the Halloween rally in Seoul about 85 minutes after the accident broke out.

A total of five police teams of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) were mobilized on the day of a crowd crush in Seoul’s Itaewon district that killed at least 156 people, most of them in their 20s, according to data provided by SMPA. Representative Lee Tae-won of the main opposition Democratic Party was reported by Yonhap News Agency.

Police Squad No. 11 first arrived at the scene at 11:40 p.m. on Oct. 29 on the instructions of Lee Im Jae, the former chief of the Yongsan police station that houses Itaewon. The first call was made to the police’s emergency hotline 112 around 10:15 p.m.

Four other teams arrived at the scene one by one, from 11:50 p.m. on October 29 to 1:14 a.m. on October 30, according to SMPA data.

Lee, who was temporarily suspended from his post, was also found to have arrived at Itaewon police sub-station at 11:05 p.m., about 50 minutes after the accident.
The data also showed that a total of eight units of enlisted policemen were dispatched to the site at 12:11 am on October 30. The role of the enlisted policemen is to support the police officers in various tasks such as patrols.

She said the first unit arrived at the scene at 12:50 a.m. on October 30, and seven others followed suit until 1:12 a.m.

The data showed SMPA chief Kim Kwang Ho briefed him at 11:36 p.m. by Yongsan Police Chief on Oct. 29, leaving the police high command in the dark for more than an hour.

An independent team of investigators announced that Lee had arrived late at the police sub-station after he insisted on moving his car despite heavy traffic around Itaewon at the time.

After leaving a restaurant where he was having dinner with officers from his office, Lee arrived at Noksapyeong Station around 10 p.m. The station is only a 10-minute walk from the scene of the accident.

However, Lee’s car veered off the subway station to find other ways, and he could only get to a street near the police sub-station around 10:55 PM and 11:01 PM.
