Playoff approved for Serie A when teams finish level on points

Rome, June 30 (BNA) The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed that the Serie A title will be decided by a play-off starting from next season if the first two teams finish equal in points.

Serie A clubs discussed the idea earlier this month and the federation said in a statement late on Tuesday that it had been approved at a meeting of its federal advisor, Reuters reported.

There will be no extra time in the play-off, which will go straight to penalties if the teams stay together after 90 minutes.

Last season’s title was decided on the final day of the season, as Milan won their first league title in 11 years after beating Sassuolo, making them finish by two points over rivals Inter Milan.

Had they tied the match to finish the same points with Inter, Milan would still have been crowned champions because of their head-to-head record.

No other team in Europe uses a playoff, as tournaments are based on the goal difference of separate teams.

The Serie A playoff title has only been decided once before, with Bologna beating Inter 2-0 in Rome in 1964.
