Openda still on fire as Lens jump up to second with Rennes win

Paris, April 2 (BNA): Luis Obenda scored in the first half of RC Lens’ 1-0 win at Stade Rennes to catapult Olympique de Marseille into second place in the Ligue 1 standings on Saturday.

The Belgian striker scored the net for the 15th time this season in the league, to bring the north to 60 points from 29 matches, ahead of OM on goal difference, after the Provence side were held to a 1-1 draw with Montpellier on Friday.

Reuters reports that Paris Saint-Germain lead the standings with 66 points before they host Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.

Rennes is in fifth place with 50 points.

Lens, who got back on track after a run of four consecutive matches in February, took the lead in the 31st minute when Openda headed in from Florian Satoka’s cross for his sixth goal in his last three Ligue 1 matches.

Rennes responded immediately, only for Benjamin Borregood’s strike to hit the crossbar and Carl Toko Ekambi’s attempt to go wide before the break.

Sekou Fofana came close to doubling Lens’s lead in the second half, but saw it go wide.

Goalkeeper Bryce Samba then ensured the visitors left Roazon Park with all three points and two good saves to deny Arnaud Kalimuendo and Borigaud as Frank Hayes’ side claimed their third consecutive win.
