Madrid, April 25 (BNA): Defending champion Anas Jaber withdrew from the Madrid Open tennis tournament today, Monday, due to a left calf injury, which hindered her preparation for the French Open next month.
Fourth seed Jabeur, a 28-year-old from Tunisia, stopped playing against top seed Iga Swiatek on Saturday while trailing 3-0 in the first set of the clay-court tournament semi-finals in Stuttgart, Germany.
Jaber posted what she described as an “update on my situation” on her Twitter account on Monday, saying she had “several medical tests” that revealed a “small tear” in her calf, according to the Associated Press.
The main draw for the Madrid Open begins on Tuesday. Jabeur is the latest high-profile player to withdraw, joining 22-time Grand Slam champions Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Jaber finished second in two Grand Slam tournaments in 2022: Wimbledon and the US Open.
She entered last year’s French Open as one of the favorites to win the title after winning on the red clay – including the title in Madrid – but lost in the first round at Roland Garros.
