OIC Secretary-General welcomes Afghan government’s ban on opium

Jeddah, April 4 (BNA) The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Hussein Ibrahim Taha, welcomed the decision announced by the de facto authorities in Kabul, which prohibits the cutting of poppies. The order also prohibits the manufacture, trade and transportation of narcotics.

The Secretary-General noted that the strict ban on poppy cultivation is in line with the commitment of the current government in Afghanistan to deploy effective anti-drug measures, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference emphasized that the cultivation of high-value alternative crops as well as rehabilitation programs for Afghans suffering from drug addiction, should be an essential part of the assistance and reconstruction efforts of the international community.
