Quito, April 1 (BNA) The Ecuadorian government today, Friday, raised the death toll from a landslide in the Andean city of Aluse to 23, while rescue teams continued to search for missing people.


The accident occurred Sunday night in a part of the city that is located in Chimborazo Prefecture. The landslide affected about 850 people and destroyed 57 buildings, according to official figures.


According to Reuters, the death toll is gradually increasing as rescue groups reach homes that have been covered by huge amounts of earth.


“Security protocols are being applied to stabilize the ground so that teams can continue search and rescue work in the affected area, including the use of machinery,” the country’s risk agency said in its latest report on Friday.


At least 67 people are still missing, while 38 people were injured.


Ecuador’s disaster agency warned of potential landslide danger in a 247-hectare (610-acre) area of ​​Aluse in February, which includes part of the area where the landslide occurred on Sunday.


Authorities also issued similar warnings for areas in other Andean provinces on Friday due to risks of flooding and landslides.


Heavy rains damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
