Nike suspends relationship with Greenwood amid assault allegations

Sportswear giant Nike said on Monday it had suspended its relationship with Manchester United player Mason Greenwood, after accusations surfaced online that the 20-year-old had assaulted a woman.

United said on Sunday it was “aware of the images and allegations circulated on social media” and later confirmed that Greenwood would not return to training or play at Old Trafford until further notice, Reuters reported.

“We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood. We are deeply concerned about the disturbing allegations and will continue to monitor the situation closely,” a Nike spokesperson told Reuters.

The allegations against Greenwood – including videos, photographs and an audio memo – were posted on Instagram on Sunday and were later deleted.

Greater Manchester Police said a man had been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault and was being held for questioning after a woman posted photos and videos reporting incidents of physical violence.

On Monday, police said investigators were given “extra time to speak to a man in his 20s”.

“The suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon (Sunday, January 30) and is still under arrest,” the police added.
