UN chief says the world is in a new era marked by the highest major power competition in decades

New York, July 21 (BNA): Secretary-General António Guterres has told the world that the post-Cold War era is over and that the world is heading towards a new multipolar era already marked by the highest level of geopolitical tensions and great power competition in decades.

He warned that these divisions undermine the cornerstone of the United Nations – where all countries work together to solve global challenges, according to the Associated Press.

Guterres presented his bleak view of the world in a policy paper outlining his “new peace agenda” to diplomats from the 193 member states of the United Nations. He said it was an attempt by the United Nations to confront the new threats.

The UN Secretary-General stressed the critical importance of preserving multilateralism, saying, “In our fractured and turbulent world, it is imperative for nations to preserve our global institution, in which they have a stake.”

Then-United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali presented the original peace plan in 1992 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War with the United States.

He welcomed the end of “antagonism and mistrust” between the great powers and outlined how the United Nations could intensify its work on preventive diplomacy, peacekeeping and peacebuilding.

The peace agenda proposed by the UN Secretary-General urges states to move toward “smart and adaptive” peacekeeping models with exit strategies, and to support “peace enforcement actions by regional and subregional organizations,” mandated by the Security Council, prompted by UN member states, and backed by political efforts to promote peace.

“No continent needs this new generation of peace enforcement missions more than Africa,” Guterres said.

The “New Agenda for Peace” is one of several political papers that the Secretary-General urges all countries to consider before the Future Summit, which he called for in September 2024, where the United Nations hopes to adopt a new vision for the coming years that reflects the world today and preserves pluralism.
