New York, Washington flights delayed by weather and failing equipment

Washington, June 26 (BNA): Thunderstorms and equipment failure at an FAA facility caused major delays for air travelers across the US East Coast on Sunday night as Washington and New York were forced to halt most incoming flights for a brief period.

As the evening progressed, flights from the Washington area resumed after communications repairs were completed, the FAA said.

But delays continued for several New York airports after thunderstorms earlier forced ground stops.

The FAA had previously cited thunderstorms for ground stops at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Philadelphia Airport, Newark Liberty Airport, New York JFK Airport and LaGuardia Airport.

“The facility has been turned into a backup system,” the FAA said in a statement, explaining the delays in the Washington area.

Flight-tracking website FlightAware said 39% of flights departing from Newark Liberty and 47% of flights departing from LaGuardia airports were delayed.
