BEIJING, June 27 (BNA): Four people were killed and three others are missing after landslides hit a county in southwest China’s Sichuan Province on Tuesday, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 900 people.
Landslides, caused by flash floods, occurred in the towns of Miansi and Weizhou, Wenchuan County, the Associated Press reported.
State media said more than 400 rescuers were searching for those missing after the landslides, which occurred early Tuesday. Four people, including a couple from the town of Miansy, were found dead later on Tuesday, while three others are still missing, according to the official CCTV broadcast.
China’s state news agency Xinhua reported that more than 900 people in the area had been evacuated.
Wenchuan County was the site of a devastating earthquake in 2008 that killed at least 69,000 people, according to the Chinese government.
China experiences extreme weather patterns, with heavy rains in the southern regions and record temperatures in the north including the capital, Beijing.
