New York, July 1 (BNA): Twitter will now require users to have an account on the social media platform to view tweets, a move owner Elon Musk called a “temporary emergency measure.”
Users attempting to view content on the platform will be required to register for an account or log into an existing account to view their favorite tweets.
“We have been getting data looted to a large extent which has degraded the service for regular users!” Mr. Musk said in a tweet.
He added that hundreds or more organizations were scraping Twitter data “very aggressively,” affecting user experience.
Musk has previously expressed his displeasure with AI companies like OpenAI, owner of ChatGPT, that use Twitter data to train their large language models.
“We will definitely take legal action against those who stole our data and look forward to seeing them in court, which is (optimistically) 2 to 3 years from now,” he said.
In a letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro in May asked the tech giant to conduct an audit of its use of Twitter content, alleging that the Windows developer had breached an agreement over the social media company’s data use.
The company has begun a suite of actions to bring back advertisers who have left the platform under Musk’s ownership and increase subscription revenue by making verification check tags part of the Twitter Blue program.
In June, Twitter announced plans to focus on video, creator and commerce partnerships to revitalize the social media company’s business beyond digital advertising.
Twitter has also started charging users for access to its Application Programming Interface (API), which is used by third-party apps and researchers.
