London, June 29 (BNA): Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has left Chelsea to join Saudi club Al-Ahly, the two clubs announced today, Wednesday.
Al-Ahly said in a tweet on Twitter, “The Lion of Teranga protects our goal.” Al-Ahly, who will return to the first professional league next season after a year in the second division, said that Mendy’s contract will continue until 2026.
Mendy joined Premier League Chelsea from Rennes in 2020 and the 31-year-old played a pivotal role as the London club won their second Champions League title with a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the final in 2021.
After the departure of Chelsea German coach Thomas Tuchel, Mendy fell behind Kepa Arrizabalaga in the standings under coach Graham Potter and then Frank Lampard, according to Reuters.
The Saudi Professional League has become an attractive destination for professional players in Europe since Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Al-Nassr last January.
League champions Al-Ittihad signed Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema earlier this month, while the club also confirmed the transfer of former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante last week.
Mendy became the third player from Chelsea to move to Saudi Arabia after Kante and compatriot Kalidou Coulibaly joined Al Hilal.
Earlier this month, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced a project to invest and privatize sports clubs involving league champions Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahly, Al-Nasr and Al-Hilal.
