Florida July 8 (Us): On a night with only two songs scored, the flamboyant Atlanta Braves held on to win.
With right-hander Charlie Morton entering the seventh inning and Shaun Murphy extending a power-up that saw Atlanta homer in 24 straight outings, MLB’s best Braves began their weekend streak between baseball’s two-digitest-highest teams with a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays that night. Friday.

“You’d like to see him be rewarded for that. He walked out of the game because he had cramps in both hands, both quads,” said Rays coach Kevin Cash. “We’ve seen it before, it’s kind of sneaky a little bit. He wanted to keep going.”
Murphy deepened in the fourth after Atlanta’s first baseman, Matt Olson, reached on an error. The right-center push wiped out a 1-0 lead against the Rays with a homer by Wanderer Franco off Morton in the first.
Atlanta, which leads the Majors with 167 attendees, has hosted a 24-game winning streak dating back to June 11. This is the longest active streak in the majors and the second longest in the franchise’s modern era after 25 players in 1998.
Morton, who was 18-8 with a 3.33 ERA in 42 starts over two seasons with Tampa Bay, started at Tropicana Field for the first time since leaving the Rays after helping the team reach the World Series in 2020.
The 39-year-old right-hander allowed one run and four hits as Atlanta turned to center field with one out in the seventh. AJ Minter, Nick Anderson and Raisel Iglesias, who worked the ninth into his 16th saves in 18 chances, finished the six batters.
The Braves, meanwhile, were limited to two goals as Ronald Acuna Jr. (16 games) and Marcel Ozuna (15) saw the end of their long hitting runs.
“It’s about winning the game,” Braves coach Brian Snicker said. “I don’t care how you do it.”
“In return for this show, you’re not going to get a lot of hits together,” Snicker added. “We were lucky that Sean got into it and that was enough.”
Glasnow left after giving up a single to Olson with two outs in the sixth. He struck out six direct hits at one point, including all four he faced in the second inning, which were prolonged when Ozuna hit a wild pitch that allowed him to reach base.
Cash said Glasnow has experienced cramps before during his career, including during his most recent win in Auckland on June 14.
“We can’t say exactly why that is,” Cash said.
Glasnow said the problem was not a drought and that he expected his next scheduled start.
“I don’t know what it is now. It’s only been a couple starts, so I’m not sure what it is,” said Glasnow.
The pitcher added, “When I’m out…just like pushing the mound, like the muscles in my left leg and arm are really cramping up.” “I don’t feel fatigued. I don’t feel fatigued. It’s really weird. I’m hydrated, I do tests. So I don’t know. It’s just weird.”
