Nuclear reactor in southern South Korea comes to halt during electricity transmission test

Yongwang, July 24 (BNA): A reactor at the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant in South Yonggwang County stopped working Monday during a system test.

Yonhap reported that the shutdown of the 950,000-kilowatt Unit Two reactor occurred at 11:56 am when its turbine stopped, sending an abnormal signal while testing a special protection system that prevents electricity overload on the power transmission line.

The turbine stop automatically shut down the reactor.

“Currently, the reactor is in a stable condition and its radiation is still at a normal level,” the authorities said, adding that they will work to restart the reactor after investigating the cause of the shutdown.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Authority confirmed that no radioactive leakage or other problems were reported, and said it plans to conduct an in-depth investigation into the cause of the accident by dispatching experts to the site.
