Bahrain Victorious rider Bilbao sprints to first Tour de France stage win as Vingegaard keeps yellow jersey

Paris, July 11 (BNA): Belo Bilbao’s victory was an emotional and costly first Tour de France win on Tuesday. The Spanish cyclist cruised to victory at the end of the difficult tenth stage and also took a big time in the overall standings, which is still led by Jonas Vingaard.

Bilbao raised his arms above his head in celebration of the end of one of the Tour’s toughest stages yet, finishing the undulating 167-kilometre (104-mile) route from Vulcania to Essuer ahead of George Zimmermann and Ben O’Connor. In the sweltering heat of central France.

The Bahrain Victorious rider immediately dedicated his victory to his former teammate and friend Gino Mader, who died last month from injuries sustained in a Tour de Suisse crash.

“I closed the gap with O’Connor first, and then in cold blood let Zimmerman go the full 200 meters without thinking about anything,” said Bilbao. “And then I crossed the line and pumped all the energy I had inside and remembered the reason for this victory.” A special victory for Gino. “

Bilbao announced before the Tour that it would follow Mäder’s actions, by donating one euro to each rider who beats him on each stage in order to fund the replanting of trees in deforestation areas.
It beat 168 riders on Tuesday.
Most of the overall contenders finished at just over three minutes, and that saw Bilbao move up from 11th to fifth, less than two minutes off the podium.

Defending champion Vingegaard maintained his 17-second advantage over two-time winner Tadeg Bugar. Guy Hindley was third, 2 minutes and 40 seconds off the lead.

After the first rest day on Monday, the Tour kicked off week two with a tough stage that featured five categorized climbs and almost no flat sections. The high temperatures are made even more brutal by the heat reflecting off the roads.

It was rough from the start and several riders were clearly struggling. But in the end a fraction of 14 was formed.

Krists Neilands looked like one of the 14 strongest and attacked on the final climb, overtaking the Côte de la Chapelle-Marcoussi with a 30-second advantage. However, he was chased down by Bilbao on the descent and caught with only 3km to go.

“Everyone was on the edge, and Nylands made an impressive attack,” said Bilbao. “I think he was the strongest, but he expended a lot of energy with the hot wind in his face.

“In the back group we just teamed up in the right way and then in the last 3km I knew (I) was the fastest guy in the group so I just took over.”
