Switzerland beats Philippines 2-0 in its Women’s World Cup opener

Auckland, July 21 (BNA) Ramona Bachmann hit the left side of the net with a penalty kick moments before halftime to help Switzerland beat the Philippines 2-0 on Friday in the opening match of the Women’s World Cup for both teams.

Swiss Serena Bubel added a goal in the second half, scoring the rebound from a shot by Comba Sue, which was missed by Philippine goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel.

The Group A encounter was the first match inside Dunedin’s Forsyth-Barr Stadium, the only indoor stadium in the tournament. The crowd’s cheers echoed around the walls of the nearly half-full stadium, with 13,711 people in attendance in a capacity of more than 30,000 people.

Filipino striker Katrina Gilo appeared to score a goal in the 15th minute, but it was conceded due to an offside call, reports the Associated Press.

Switzerland dominated the offense and outscored the Philippines 17-3, but the Philippines defense held firm. McDaniel held her own, making several key saves in the first half – only allowing Bachmann’s late penalty.
