Mexico City, June 30 (BNA): There have been at least 112 heat-related deaths this year so far, Mexican health authorities said, acknowledging the danger of the recent heat wave.
The report, released late Wednesday, also showed a significant rise in heat-related deaths in the past two weeks. The Associated Press (AP) reports that so far this year, total heat-related deaths have tripled the numbers in 2022.
Deaths reached their peak in the week of June 18-24, with 69 deaths in one week nationwide, an unprecedented number. Temperatures in some parts of Mexico have risen to over 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) in recent weeks.
The week of June 11-17 was extraordinarily bad, with 31 people killed across the country.
So far this year, the highest number of deaths from heat stroke and dehydration have occurred in the northern border state of Nuevo León, home to the industrial hub of Monterrey.
