At least 2 killed as elevated road collapses in Bangkok

Bangkok, July 11 (BNA): Two people were killed after an elevated road under construction collapsed in the Thai capital, the authorities announced today, Tuesday.

The Bangkok city administration said 11 people were injured in the accident, which occurred on Monday night. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sitipan told a news conference on Tuesday that one person was killed at the site and another died later in hospital.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse on the western side of Bangkok. The Associated Press (AP) reported that the elevated road had been under construction since 2020.

Chadchart said the rubble at the site was removed after authorities confirmed that no one else was trapped. He said clearing the rubble could take several days.

Video footage of the moment of the collapse showed a blue metal structure that appears to be used to hold the concrete slabs, suddenly falling and bringing the entire structure down.

The construction project has been commissioned by the Bangkok authorities to Tharawan Construction and Npa Construction, according to the contract posted on the Official Information Commission Office website.

“This should not have happened,” Chadchart said while inspecting the site on Monday evening. “Someone needs to be responsible for this because someone died… This was not something that could not be prevented.”

Earlier this year, a construction worker was killed and four cars were injured in a similar accident in Bangkok, when a slab of concrete fell from a high road under construction.
