HOUSTON, June 26 (BNA): Mexico won their first match under interim coach Jaime Lozano, opening the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 4-0 win over Honduras on Sunday night.
The Associated Press reported that Luis Romo beat goalkeeper Luis Lopez with an 18-yard shot with his left foot about 50 seconds in, Mexico’s fastest Gold Cup goal.
He doubled his lead in the 23rd minute with his third international goal, heading in from close range after Jesus Gallardo nodded a corner kick against the net.
Orbelin Pineda scored in the 52nd minute, dribbling inside the penalty area before scoring his eighth international goal, and Luis Chavez added his second international goal in the 64th minute from near the penalty spot.
Diego Coca was sacked as Mexico’s coach after the CONCACAF Nations League, where Mexico lost to the United States 3-0 in the semi-finals before overcoming Panama 1-0 to finish third.
In the first match of Group B, Haiti beat visitors Qatar 2-1 after Frantzde Piero slotted a pass down the middle in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time.
Youssef Abdel-Rasaq put Qatar ahead in the 20th minute and Dickens Nazon equalized in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. In Group A in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Trinidad and Tobago beat St. Kitts and Nevis 3-0 with two goals. Alvin Jones in the 43rd position, Ajani Fortune in the 65th position, in addition to an own goal from Jamil Ibel in the 73rd minute.
